“Three times the price of two years ago”: gas prices are soaring… and it’s likely to continue

Harsh winter, end of Russian gas transit through Ukraine, tougher regulations… Prices have tripled in the last two years. Experts fear that this new surge is only just beginning.
By Erwan BenezetBad news never comes alone, it seems. While electricity prices are expected to increase in 2026 , gas prices could also soar again , after several months of calm. "Prices are rising sharply, to levels not seen in two years ," observes Nicolas Goldberg, an expert at Colombus Consulting. "They are now approaching 60 euros per megawatt hour (euros/MWh), three times the price at which they were trading two years ago."
Why such a surge? "The first factor is the weather ," explains the man who is also responsible for Energy at the Terra Nova think tank. "We are going through a colder winter than in previous years, so inevitably, we are using more gas throughout Europe to heat ourselves."
